-What does “ashram” mean? And where did it come from?-
The Hindi word “ashram” means “away from hard work.” United Christian Ashram founder, E. Stanley Jones spent many years in India, among such great thinkers and leaders as Mahatma Ghandi. While there he participated in forest retreats, or ashrams, which were traditionally located far from human habitation, and those who attended spent time performing spiritual and physical exercises, which brought solace, refreshment and peace to the ashramites.
-What then, is a Christian Ashram?-
It is a disciplined Christian experience held for the purpose of deeper spiritual growth in order to bring us closer to God in our daily lives. This time of retreat provides a break from the stress and complications of those lives and provides a foundation for moving toward the grace and presence of Jesus Christ.
My soul finds rest in God alone: My salvation comes from Him.
– Psalms 62:1
